The Student Government Association cordially invites you to a special address by President C.D. “Dan” Mote to the undergraduate student body. The address will be one of the final events of the inaugural year of the SGA/Alumni Association Speaker Series. President Mote, who will be speaking about “Building a Culture of Greatness,” is due to retire from the presidency at the end of August.
His speech will reflect on his time at the university and offer insight into the future. This event is free and open to the public. An ice cream and cookie reception will follow the event, featuring the President’s favorite ice cream Mochalotta Mote.

The SGA’s Executive Candidate Debate will be held in the Atrium in the Stamp Student Union at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 19, the night before voting begins. Listen as the candidates discuss their platforms and important issues that will affect you. There will be an open Q&A session at the end of the debate for students to ask the candidates their own questions.

Interested in learning more about the City of College Park? Apply to be the student City Council Liaison!
The student liaison serves as an executive cabinet member of the SGA and as a member of the Governmental Affairs Department and the Public Affairs Legislative Committee. In addition to his or her duties in the SGA, the student liaison gets the opportunity to attend all city meetings and is given the same speaking privileges as council members. They are responsible for strongly advocating for the views of students, as well as keeping students conscious of all that is going on in the city.

Mandatory Candidate Information Sessions for students who wish to learn more about running for a legislative or executive position for the 2010-2011 academic year will be held on March 11 at 7 p.m. in Margaret Brent in the Stamp Student Union, March 22 at 9 p.m. in Banneker B in the Stamp Student Union and March 29 at 7 p.m. in Banneker A in the Stamp Student Union.
All students who wish to run in the election MUST attend one of these three sessions in order to be eligible. In addition, students must attend one SGA legislative body meeting in its entirety on either March 24 or March 31. Elections Board members will be taking attendance at the meetings.

The Student Government Association forum will feature journalism alumni working in the fields of public relations, law, business and academia. The event will be held on Feb. 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Eaton Broadcast Theater in the new Knight Hall and is co-sponsored by the Philip Merrill College of Journalism.
Facing unprecedented challenges in the face of a tough economy and a changing industry, this distinguished panel will focus on alternative career options for current journalism students. Topics will include how to apply journalism skills to other professions and panelists’ paths to success, followed by a question and answer session.
Following the panel, we invite you to stay for refreshments and snacks, as well as to talk and network with the panelists.

For the first time in five years, the SGA president has appointed an RHA representative to serve on the Committee for the Review of Student Fees. This is just the first of many collaborative efforts the two organizations have engaged in as they both work to maximize their impact on our campus.

Behind the efforts of the Student Government Association, the University of Maryland was recently named America’s Greenest Campus. The competition, sponsored by ClimateCulture.com, won the SGA $5,000 to use toward its sustainability efforts.
